Whales have landed on the Ashkelon shoreline in the form of giant environmental sculptures on the new boardwalk north of the Ashkelon Marina.
The 1.25 million NIS artistic project, funded by the Tourism Ministry, is the creative work of Israeli sculptor Arele Ben Arieh who drew inspiration from the image of the whale as a mysterious and awesome sea mammal and represents the coastal city’s ancient heritage as described in the Scriptures.
The giant 11 meters wide by 9 meters high environmentally-friendly sculptures incorporate play equipment including a climbing wall, swings and slides.
Ashkelon’s 12 miles of Mediterranean beaches, rich history and archeology dating back 400 years, hotels, marina, water park and other attractions have made the city into an appealing tourist destination.
